About...
Catherine has been writing songs for as long as she can remember. Now at 27, this lengthy experience is audible in the well crafted, easy on the ear, memorable melodies of her songs, as well as their truthful, expressive lyrics.
Even before she was moulding her own material, Catherine was playing piano, the instrument that remains the main accompaniment to her songs. She started practising at the age of 4, and picked up the flute at 8. Singing and saxophone soon followed. Perhaps unsurprisingly, having excelled in music at school and college, Catherine pursued further studies in music. She graduated from Leeds College of Music with a degree in Jazz Studies in 2000. After graduation, Catherine continued working in music, both as a teacher and a performer. She taught woodwind instruments in schools for a year and continues to teach a small jazz band. Apart from playing flute and saxophone in a jazz band, she has a residency as a pianist and singer at Brookland Hotel in her hometown Barnsley. But it's the singing and performing her own songs that is now the priority for Catherine. The stockpile of melodically rich, jazz and soul-influenced songs, to which her clear voice adds a hint of country lilt, keeps on growing, and she is currently putting the pick of the bunch on tape with her backing band. Catherine recently made her live debut as a singer/songwriter in Wakefield. Despite loving the experience and planning on repeating it, her focus now is on writing songs. She is determined to hone her talents further, and her sights are set on getting these songs across to the wider audience they deserve. |
